Our trainees receive the highest quality training. BHW is a Legal 500 and Chambers Leading Firm and all its Partners and training principals are Legal 500 Recommended Lawyers. The nature of our client base and our specialist expertise means that our trainees are exposed to much larger and more important transactions than is usual for a firm of our size.

Trainees complete four six-month seats, covering both contentious and non-contentious work. At each seat, trainees shadow a Partner or Associate and play an important role in departmental work. Trainees are also expected to perform administrative and support tasks (both departmentally and generally within the Firm) and are expected to contribute to marketing, networking, and social media activities. Comprehensive training plans and records are maintained for each trainee and progress reviews are completed regularly.

Candidates must have strong academics, usually having at least a 2:1 degree from a reputable university. Enthusiasm, ambition, and a strong desire to learn are prerequisites. Successful candidates will also need to have excellent attention to detail and be down-to-earth, pragmatic, patient, and very hard working.

Because we only give training contracts to those who we consider have the potential to be our future Partners, successful candidates usually live within a sensible commuting distance of our offices.

Applying for a Training Contract with BHW

We usually fill four-six trainee vacancies each year, with successful candidates starting each Summer. The interview process is two stage and involves a question and answer first interview. Shortlisted candidates are invited to attend a second interview where they are given a mock legal scenario to consider before being asked to present their answers.

Successful recruits are required to complete a minimum 6-month probationary period before their training contract commences.

We’re currently accepting applications for training contracts beginning 2024.

To apply for a training contract with BHW, please submit a one page covering letter describing why you you wish to be a trainee solicitor with BHW and your CV (no more than 2 pages). Please ensure you include your LPC and/or Degree grades achieved.

The closing date for applications is 31st March 2024. We welcome and encourage early submissions due to the volume of applications we receive. Applicants will be notified if they have been successfully selected for interview by 30th April 2024.
